Why You Shouldn’t Ignore Drafts
Cold air sneaks in through tiny gaps around windows, doors, trim, and plumbing fixtures. That whispering breeze you feel? That’s your hard-earned heat leaking out. But the good news is: most of those leaks can be silenced with a tube of caulk.
Do the job right, and your house goes from a drafty mess to cozy for cheap. Do it wrong… well, your heating bill will remind you.
🐝 Step 1: Hunt the Leaks
Walk your house on a cool morning and feel around window & door frames, baseboards (especially on exterior walls), around plumbing and vents, and where siding meets trim.
Bee trick: Light a candle(or grab a lighter) and move it along edges — watch if the flame flickers. That’s your air leak waving “hello.”
🍯 Step 2: Use the Right Caulk for the Job
-
Indoors → Paintable latex or siliconized latex (flexible + easy to clean)
-
Outdoors → 100% silicone (weatherproof) or polyurethane (for tougher surfaces)
Cheap caulk fails fast. Spend a little now, save a lot later.
🪛 Step 3: Prep the Surface
-
Scrape out old, failing caulk
-
Clean the area with rubbing alcohol or mild soap
-
Let it dry thoroughly
-
For gaps wider than ¼ inch, push in foam backer rod first
If you skip prep, the new caulk won’t stick—but you’ll still see the crack.
✍️ Step 4: Apply It Cleanly
-
Cut the tip of the caulk tube at a 45° angle
-
Hold the gun at the same angle and apply steady pressure
-
Drag slowly and steadily
-
Use your finger or a damp rag to smooth it out
-
Wipe away excess immediately (don’t let it dry messily)
Clean lines = professional look.
🛡️ Step 5: Let It Cure & Seal It In
Let the caulk dry or cure (usually ~24 hours — check the tube).
If it’s paintable latex, paint over it for a seamless blend and extra protection.
💡 What You Get (Besides a Warmer House)
-
Less draft, less chill
-
Lower heating bills
-
Fewer bugs sneaking in
-
A more comfortable, quiet home
-
Work you can feel almost immediately
